The Blank Generation

Released: 1976 | Director: Ivan Kral

The best of New York punk filmed live at CBGB and more as the movement was just starting. Includes performances by Patti Smith Group, Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Television, New York Dolls and more.

See punk icons in their humble beginnings with music recorded from band demo cassettes and more. This is the original DIY film, not to be confused with other films with the same title.

The Blank Generation has been called the first visual testament to the birth of New York punk. See the scene unfold in this gritty, raw and real historical document.

Filmmaker Ivan Kral was a musician with Patti Smith Group, Iggy Pop and Blondie from 1974 - 1979. This gave him easy access to document musicians and artists for The Blank Generation. The musicians could finally see how they appeared live onstage in the film in those pre-video days. Edited with No-Wave filmmaker Amos Poe.

Originally, Ivan shot band clip compilations as a future memento of his New York days in case he was deported back to artless Czechoslovakia in 1979.

Performance footage was filmed by Ivan Kral. Non-performance footage was contributed by Amos Poe.
